Reception Class

In our classroom we aim to support pupils to develop into happy, independent and resilient workers. Each half term we have a curriculum focus centred around a topic. Our morning session concentrates on building Language and Maths skills, along with developing reading skills. In the afternoon sessions we use our new skills to help us research, solve problems, be creative and more. We enjoy regular Forest School sessions and use the outdoors and our local environment to engage in hands-on learning experiences.

Maths

We use White Rose Maths across the school. It is practical and teaches us tools to solve problems. In Reception we begin to cover the foundations of:

  • Number and Place value

  • Addition and Subtraction

  • Measurement of Length

  • Time

  • Fractions

  • Properties of Shapes

  • Money

Phonics (Letters and Sounds)

Learning to read and write is a magical time in a child's life and we aim to inspire and enthuse all pupils. Letters and Sounds is the resource we use at Guilsfield CP School to support the systematic teaching of phonics. Children begin the Letters and Sounds programme at the start of Reception year and continue across into Years 1 and 2. We teach letters and sounds for 20mins every day.

How can you help your child at home?

Reading with your child at least 3 times per week is really important. There is also a list of spellings (high frequency words) for them to practice inside their reading folders which are based on words they have been introduced to in Letters and Sounds. Helping your child to practice these and listening to them read is crucial. You can help their Maths by practising counting forwards and backwards and learning number bonds to 10 and then 20. Keep maths fun and real-life by using it in day-to-day routines. Talk about maths when travelling, in the shop, telling the time and so much more!
