Croeso i Blwyddyn 6!
Welcome to Year 6!
Please read on to find out about our class and our main aims in Year 6.
Blwyddyn 6
If your child is in Year 6, they are in their very important final year of Primary School. Next year they will begin the next phase of their education at secondary school and we aim to ensure that your child is well prepared for this transition.
We encourage independence in everything possible in Year 6, encouraging children to have a good sense of responsibility and great organisational skills. Therefore, we emphasise to the children that it is their responsibility to remember their PE kit, swimming kit, homework and letters on the appropriate days!
Throughout the year we cover a range of topics as shown below. In addition to this, the core subjects of Maths, English, Science and Welsh 2nd Language will be assessed at the end of Year 6.
Maths and Numeracy
We follow the White Rose scheme of work for maths lessons and homework is set each week which is directly linked to what the children have learnt during the week.
Language, Literacy and Communication
In English lessons, we teach the following text types: instruction, information, discussion, persuasion and explanation. We follow the Nelson Handwriting scheme, 'Read, Write, Inc' Spelling Scheme and the school has uses 'Super Sentences' in order to develop grammar and sentence structures for writing. All children have individual reading books and guided reading is carried out on a weekly basis in both English and Welsh. Oracy tasks are also taught alongside the focussed text types.
Homework
Homework is linked to our topic and each week pupils are given the choice of what items they would like to produce. In addition to this I encourage independent reading daily, as regular reading supports high level writing, listening and oracy skills.
Topics
In Year 6 we will cover a range of topics and in order to ensure that our learners are leading learning, at the beginning of a new term the children will have the opportunity to vote on what topic they want to cover and then to brainstorm, in groups, the content they wish to learn about within each of the six AOLE's.
